Aquarium Filters: The Importance of Filtration

The importance of filtration in aquaria cannot be stressed enough. But what is filtration exactly? In the most general definition of the term it "cleans" the fish tank. But does it?

Good aquarium filters will provide cleaner water but only if the unit is selected to suit the water volume of the aquarium. Often there is a shortfall in this regard.

A great aquarium filter system (often times a combination of equipment) will do more than help clean the water; it will contribute to the overall "balance" of an aquarium eco-system.

Ideally an aquarium will have a targeted water chemistry (achieved via a consistent water testing procedure and a correct follow up maintenance plan). This, in conjunction with ideal water quality, is the first real key to success with aquaria.

So how does one go about selecting an aquarium filter which will really make a significant difference to the health of their eco-system?

For optimum results in fresh water aquaria one should consider a canister power filter which turns over the aquarium AT LEAST 3 times per hour with an internal back up power head for additional in tank circulation. Alternately, one should consider a power filter on its own which circulates the aquarium AT LEAST 6 times per hour.

Furthermore the quality of the filter media is an important consideration. A good filter unit will be capable of functioning in three ways; namely, (i) mechanically, (ii) chemically (absorptive) and (iii) biologically. If a power filter unit does not offer this multi functional method it may be inferior, ultimately interfere with your water quality and lead to a combination of disappointments - not the least of which includes fish loss.

In marine aquaria the area of filtration is not quite so cut and dried. There are those hobbyists who still prefer the reliable though perhaps controversial Trickle Filter method while seemingly the majority of experienced hobbyists are relying on other ways to control nutrient because that, if anything, is the most accurate definition of the term filtration, "nutrient control"; and no where is its importance more clearly understood in the aquarium hobby than in the area of marine aquaria.

In the marine hobby (particularly Reef keeping) filtration doesn’t always present itself in a single neat and tidy package. Much of the nutrient control occurs by means of less conventional methods including the use of live rock and live sand while the filter (as apposed to being a recognizable filter unit per say) might be a combination of components often including numerous water pumps (either internal or external closed loop). Water flow is so hugely important in the marine aquarium that hobbyists are applying higher and higher flow rates with ever increasing success. To meet this need Tunze has developed the Stream Pump which provides extremely high flow but with a very gentle, wide, fan arced form of distribution as apposed to a disruptive, piercing, narrow jet. This way the hobbyist can safely increase the flow of their aquarium without causing damage to valuable invertebrate life.
