All About Aquarium Lighting
Successful aquaria are all about life support. Filtration is the primary form of aquarium life support. Another form
of equally important life support is aquarium lighting.
Rarely is domestic aquaria illuminated correctly or adequately. The first consideration when choosing this vital
piece of equipment is the depth of the aquarium. In freshwater planted aquaria once a depth of 50cm is exceeded one
should consider the use of Metal Halide aquarium lights as apposed to fluorescent. Furthermore once the aquarium
exceeds 1.2m in length one should consider the use of two 70 or 150 watt units.
Aquatic Plants are gluttons for light - it is in fact one of their primary "foods". In conjunction with carbon
dioxide they utilize light to perform photosynthesis (the production of sugar and carbohydrates). Without this vital
nutrient on the menu they stunt, become prone to algae attack- even perish. Most aquatic plants sold to hobbyists
have a storehouse of "reserved energy". This is why they will seem to survive, even grow; under inadequate aquarium
lighting - they’re relying on stored energy. Once this is exhausted the process of decline is rapid.
When fluorescent aquarium lights are being used it is wise to consider the use of the compact form which offers a
wider variety of tubes with superior colour temperatures including a 50%/50% tube which consists of 2 different
colours in one tube.
For Marine Aquaria where light intensity is of paramount importance Metal Halide Light is the preferred choice for
all but the smallest of aquariums. Coral and other light dependent invertebrates will also arrive at aquarium centres
with a limited supply of "stored energy". However if they are not immediately re-housed under sufficient Metal Halide
Lighting (NOT MERCURY VAPOR) the process of degeneration is alarmingly rapid.
Apart from temperature fluctuation (which precipitates coral bleaching) and poor water quality the most common reason
for invertebrate mortality in aquaria is insufficient illumination.
The Preferred Brands of Metal Halide aquarium lighting include Tunze, Dupla, Geisman and Sfiligio. The most popular
aquarium light bulbs for these units include (in alphabetical order) BLV Osram, Radium and Sylvania. All of the brands
mentioned offer a variety of bulbs in a variety of colour temperatures. It is crucial that the correct bulb is
selected specifically for each differing application.
