If you are what you eat many aquarium fish are Crude Fiber and not much else.
There is a plethora of fish food choices on the market. Ask any aquarium wholesaler and they’ll tell you, fish food
is a HUGE part of their business. It must be difficult to know how to make a selection. At the end of the day
(in these economically tight times) it might be tempting to make ones choices based on the cost alone. However,
without first scrutinizing the packages, this method could actually be false economy and end up costing the consumer
even more.
Some fish food manufacturers (such as New Life Spectrum, HBH, Dupla and O.S.I.) are very good at producing well
balanced value for money food formulas. Another thing that many food manufacturers are very good at is packaging.
One way that the consumer can protect themselves from false economy is by comparing the weights of foods RATHER
THAN LOOKING AT THE SIZE OF THE CONTAINER. In many cases the smaller container actually contains MORE FOOD! A very
clear illustration of this is in the comparison of flake foods verses the ever more popular granulated foods.
A 300g package of Brand A granulated food in a compact container will often cost as much as 30% less than a much
larger 200g package of Brand Z Flake food.
Flake food is quite often far more expensive. It takes up more room in the container but is very light weight in
comparison to a compact granulate. The nature of flake food is to float quickly across the surface of the water and
end up in the filter whereas granulated food (available in various sizes to suit the various mouth sizes of fish)
will slowly sink giving all the fishes an opportunity to feed.
In addition to the size of the packages is the consideration of what exactly is IN the fish food itself. Flake food
(unless it is one of the now SUPERIOR Spirulina based formulas) often consists of cheap fillers while many of the
popular granulated options are rich in high quality ingredients such as actual seafood.
Two other excellent options are the tablet and disc shaped fish foods which feed all fish (except strict top feeders)
quite effectively. When a quality product is selected these sinking fish foods will remain in a firm edible condition
for hours without clouding the water. This is a far more natural way for fishes to feed, in a gradual grazing manner.
The reader is warned to again carefully scrutinize the ingredients listing of such products looking for quality
supplements at the top of the list. These should include the before mentioned spirulina algae and quality proteins
including shrimp, crab and even lobster as such seafood boosts the immune system and is a rich source of natural
colour enhancer.
Economy brand fish foods often leave fish still hungry- even after over feeding. This leads to poor water quality and
potential premature mortality in addition to the health complications as a result of poor nutrition which includes
rickets and ulceration.
