The keen aquatic gardener is aware that carbon dioxide injection is a must. But not all shoppers have a clear idea of the distinction between the various systems.
With CO2 one has two basic options, (i) a manual system, or (ii) an automatic one.
(i) Manual systems start at approximately $300.00 for up to 2000 litres. The manual system requires a pressure reducer, bubble counter, intank CO2 tester, check valve and reactor the best quality and value is Tunze brand. Manual systems require routine checks of the pH value. Further, the bottle must be turned off at night and back on in the morning without fail.
(ii)To turn these systems automatic (digital pH control / CO2 switched on and off) one simply adds a controller and a magnetic valve. This costs an additional $633.00 (approximately). The above prices assume a bottle of CO2 is rented from a company like BOC gases Other critical factors include:
- monitoring the carbonate hardness and assuring that a sufficient level is present to work in conjunction with the CO2 system
- Adequate lighting at the correct colour temperature (metal halide being the superior choice)
- GOOD iron fertilization
- GOOD water circulation
- A sizeable population of algae eating fishNOTE:The best option for gas supply is to rent a bottle from a company such as BOC. The fee is minimal, about $100.00 a year rental and about $60.00 a year for refills.
- The most cost effective automatic system is Tunze equipment as follows:Tunze pH controller and magnetic valve a Tunze pressure reducer and Tunze CO2 reactor. link here http://www.aquaria.com.au/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/6_86/products_id/3902
